The Beauty in the Breakage: Turning Broken Dishes into Wearable Art

breaking dishes

Ever wonder what happens to chipped or forgotten dishes?

Around here, they get a second life. I carefully break old china and ceramic pieces to create one of a kind pendants, each with its own story, texture, and charm. It’s a little bit of destruction and a whole lot of transformation. You can watch the process in the videos below and see how each broken piece becomes something beautifully wearable.

There’s something oddly satisfying about taking a pretty china plate and carefully breaking it into pieces. It feels a little rebellious, a little therapeutic, and totally creative. These once delicate dishes are getting a second life, ready to be turned into something new and beautiful.

When it comes to breaking dishes for pendants, I don’t get to always choose where they break… they choose for me. Some pieces have weak spots or hairline cracks, and others simply snap in unexpected ways. Certain patterns make it tricky too, especially when a beautiful design ends up right on the edge or breaks through the middle. It’s part of the challenge and the magic. Each piece becomes what it wants to be, and I just do my best to honor it in the process.

"Broken china lasts longer than unbroken." — Jules Renard

I found this sweet little bee plate and cup at an antique store in Virginia, and it felt like a treasure made just for me. Today, I’m cutting them up to give that bee a brand new life, still just as charming, but now part of something handmade and meaningful.

That unpredictability is what makes each pendant so special, no two will ever be the same. Some come out perfectly centered, others a little wild and offbeat, but all of them carry a story in their cracks and curves.

It's a beautiful reminder that broken doesn’t mean ruined… it means reimagined.
